Dropbox Transfer alternatives for large files

The best Dropbox Transfer alternative is the one that takes the whole delivery in one link, because Dropbox caps a transfer at 2 GB on Basic, 50 GB on Plus and 100 GB on most business plans. We'd pick Tranzfer for hundreds of gigabytes from a browser and MASV if you want a desktop app and pay per GB. Stay with Dropbox Transfer if your sends fit under the cap.

We make Tranzfer, so weigh our ranking with that in mind. Dropbox Transfer is a decent tool if you already pay for Dropbox, and there's a section below on when to keep it. Every fact about another service links to the page it came from.

Why do people look for a Dropbox Transfer alternative?

Usually because the delivery is bigger than the plan. Dropbox's Transfer help page (updated 24 September 2026) sets the cap per transfer by plan:

Dropbox plan Biggest transfer
Basic 2 GB
Plus, Family 50 GB
Standard, Professional, Essentials, Advanced, Business 100 GB
Business Plus, Enterprise, Replay add-on 250 GB

Apple's ProRes white paper puts one hour of UHD 4K ProRes 422 HQ at 24 fps at about 318 GB. So a single hour of footage is past every Dropbox Transfer limit, and half an hour is past the 100 GB one most business plans get. You end up splitting the shoot across links and telling your editor which one holds which card.

Folders are the second problem. The same help page says folders close to 100 GB, especially deeply nested ones or ones holding thousands of files, "can occasionally experience upload issues." Dropbox suggests cutting them to 80 to 90 GB or splitting them. A shoot folder with card dumps inside is exactly that kind of folder.

Then there's the upload itself. Dropbox's upload limits page says big browser uploads can time out and points you to the desktop app or the API. None of the Transfer help pages say whether an interrupted Transfer upload picks up where it left off. That's a gap we'd want filled before trusting it with a 90 GB send overnight.

On Basic, Family and Plus, links also expire after 7 days, and you can't change that.

How do the alternatives compare?

The last column is a heavy month: four 100 GB deliveries, one live at a time. Prices are USD on monthly billing, checked 9 October 2026. We couldn't read Dropbox's USD prices today, so check their plans page yourself.

Which one should you pick?

  • Your deliveries are 100 GB to 3 TB and you upload from a laptop: Tranzfer. Pro holds 1 TB live at once for $29 a month, and a closed tab doesn't send you back to zero.
  • You send rarely and want a desktop app. MASV. You pay $0.25 per GB after the first 15 GB each month, so a quiet month costs little.
  • You want an app and files that stay up. Filemail Pro or Business.
  • Your sends are under 2 GB. Smash or WeTransfer on their free plans, or Dropbox Basic, which you may already have.

To see how long your own upload will run, put the size and your upload speed into the upload time calculator. A 100 GB delivery on a 50 Mbps line takes about 4 h 27 min at full speed and closer to 5 h 33 min at a realistic 80%.

When is Dropbox Transfer still the better pick?

  • Your team already pays for Dropbox and your deliveries stay under your plan's cap. Adding another bill for the same job makes little sense.
  • You want branded transfers. Dropbox lets Standard and higher plans add logos and backgrounds to a transfer, and set passwords. Tranzfer has no password-protected links.
  • You want links to last longer than 14 days. On Dropbox's business plans you pick the expiry date. Tranzfer links last 14 days at most, then the files are deleted.
  • You want team seats and shared storage in the same place. Tranzfer has neither.
