Aspera alternatives for small studios
The best Aspera alternative for small studios is a browser transfer with a flat or per-GB price, because IBM Aspera on Cloud starts at $1.07 per GB on pay as you go and its fast transfers need IBM's client installed on every machine. We'd pick Tranzfer for hundreds of gigabytes from a browser and MASV if you want a desktop app and pay per GB. Keep Aspera if your partners already run on it.
We make Tranzfer, so weigh this with that in mind. Aspera is serious software and some studios should keep it. There's a section below on who. Every fact about IBM Aspera links to IBM's own pages, read on 9 October 2026.
What is Aspera, and why is it fast?
Aspera is IBM's transfer product, built on a protocol IBM calls FASP. IBM's Aspera page says it's "engineered to move massive datasets far faster than traditional TCP, FTP or SFTP," and that "While conventional protocols slow down over distance, latency and packet loss, FASP overcomes these legacy limitations." Its technology page claims transfers up to 100x faster.
So the gain is on fast links over long distances, where IBM says conventional protocols slow down. It doesn't raise your line speed. If your studio's upload is 100 Mbps, a 300 GB delivery takes 6 h 40 min at full speed with any protocol. The upload time calculator runs the numbers for your line.
Why do small studios look for an Aspera alternative?
The price. IBM publishes starting prices on its Aspera pricing page:
| IBM plan | IBM's starting price | What IBM lists with it |
|---|---|---|
| Free trial | Free for 14 days | Up to 50 GB of transfer, Standard Plus features |
| Pay As You Go | $1.07 per GB of transfer | 1 workspace, 1 transfer server |
| Essentials | $22.10 a month, with 1 TB a year | 1 TB storage, 10 TB egress |
| Standard Plus | $660 a month, with 6 TB a year | 10 TB storage, 100 TB egress, 100 workspaces |
| Lite (self-managed) | $11,916 per license a year | Unlimited transfer, your own servers |
Four 100 GB deliveries in a month cost $428 on pay as you go. Essentials includes 1 TB a year, which is ten 100 GB deliveries, or two and a half months like that one. IBM's page says "starting at" on every plan and doesn't spell out minimum terms or what happens past the included volume, so get a quote before you plan around these.
The install. IBM's Connect guide has you add a browser extension and then install the Connect app. FASP traffic goes out over UDP port 33001 by default, so the network you upload from has to allow it. IBM now offers IBM Aspera for desktop as a free replacement, with the two running side by side until Connect is retired. Either way, every freelancer who sends you footage installs something.
The no-install route has gaps. An admin can set up HTTP Gateway for people who can't install Connect. IBM says "Aspera Connect transfers are typically faster than Aspera HTTP Gateway transfers" and "You cannot resume an interrupted HTTP Gateway transfer." Folders have to be zipped or sent file by file, and you keep the tab open until the upload ends.
How do the alternatives compare?
The last column is a heavy month: four 100 GB deliveries, one live at a time. Prices are USD on monthly billing, checked 9 October 2026.
| Service | Best for | Price | How big | Interrupted upload | 4 × 100 GB a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tranzfer | Hundreds of gigabytes from a browser, on a connection you don't trust | Free, then $15, $29 or $69 a month, flat | 20 GB live at once on Free, up to 3 TB on Studio. No separate per-file cap. | Retries after a drop and carries on after sleep. After a crash or closed tab, pick the same files and only the missing parts upload. | $15 on Starter |
| MASV | Teams that want a desktop app and only pay when they send | $0.25 per GB after 15 GB free each month, or annual bundles from $58 a month for 250 GB | No cap on how much you send | Retries through network drops. A closed tab or crash in the browser starts over; the desktop app recovers. | $96.25 on Pay as you go |
| Filemail | People happy to install a desktop app who want files kept for good | Free, then Personal $6, Pro $14 and Business $24 a month | 5 GB a transfer on Free and Personal, 250 GB on Pro, any size on Business | Desktop app only. Their pages never say a browser upload resumes. | $14 on Pro |
| Smash | Free sends a bit bigger than WeTransfer's, with password links on every plan | Free, then Pro at $10 a month, or Team at $25 a month for 10 people | 2 GB at full priority on Free; bigger transfers queue. Pro: unlimited or 250 GB, see above. | Starts over. Their help says there's no way to restart a stuck upload. | $10 on Pro |
| WeTransfer | A few gigabytes to someone who already expects a WeTransfer link | Free, then Starter, Ultimate and Teams. Prices show after you sign in. | Free: 10 transfers or 3 GB per 30 days. Starter: 10 transfers or 300 GB per 30 days. Ultimate: up to 1 TB a transfer by their help center. | Not mentioned. Their help asks for a stable connection and says sleep mode cancels the upload. | Over Starter's 300 GB, so Ultimate; see their pricing |

Which one should you pick?
- Your shooters and editors upload from laptops and won't install anything: Tranzfer. Pro holds 1 TB live at once for $29 a month. After a closed tab or a crash, only the missing parts upload.
- You want a desktop app and client upload portals, and pay only when you send: MASV, at $0.25 per GB after 15 GB free each month.
- You want a desktop app at a flat price and files kept for good: Filemail.
- Your sends are small and occasional. Smash.
When is Aspera still the better pick?
- Your clients, broadcasters or distributors already send and receive through Aspera. If they deliver to an Aspera server, you're using Aspera whatever we say.
- You move data over long, lossy links on fast connections, between continents on 1 Gbps or more. That's the case FASP was built for, and Tranzfer has no accelerated UDP transfer.
- You need more than 3 TB live at once, Tranzfer's ceiling. IBM lists unlimited transfer volume on Lite.
- You want transfers on your own servers. Aspera Lite is self-managed and on-premise. Tranzfer is a hosted service only.
- You need resume in a desktop client. The Connect guide says it "Automatically retries and resumes partial and failed transfers." Tranzfer resumes in the browser and has no desktop app.
- You need workflows, workspaces and admin controls across a large team. Tranzfer has no team seats or integrations.
Before you sign anything, IBM's 14-day trial is a fair test. Run a real delivery of up to 20 GB through it and through Tranzfer Free, and compare the time and the bill.
Questions people ask
How much does IBM Aspera cost?
IBM's pricing page lists Aspera on Cloud pay as you go from $1.07 per GB, Essentials from $22.10 a month with 1 TB a year, Standard Plus from $660 a month with 6 TB a year, and self-managed Aspera Lite from $11,916 per license a year.
Is there a free trial of IBM Aspera?
Yes. IBM lists a 14-day trial with up to 50 GB of transfer volume and the Standard Plus features.
Do I need to install anything to use Aspera?
For FASP transfers in the browser, IBM's Connect guide has you add a browser extension and install the Connect app. IBM Aspera for desktop is its free replacement. An admin can set up HTTP Gateway instead, which IBM says is usually slower and can't resume.
Is FASP faster than a normal upload?
IBM says FASP holds its speed over distance, latency and packet loss where TCP slows down. It can't send more than your line carries. On a 100 Mbps upload, 300 GB takes 6 h 40 min at full speed whatever the protocol.
